warriors fall in semifinals
Ijamsville, MD - The Sherwood Warriors came into the 2023 season with one of the toughest schedules in Maryland, facing a combined opponent record of 74-34 thru 10 games, including the 4A State Champion (Quince Orchard), the 3A State Champion (Damascus), and the 3A State runner-up (Oakdale). While Sherwood managed to prevail against Damascus, their opponent in the 2022 State Championship ended the 2023 campaign for the Warriors.
"We wouldn't have it any other way," said head coach Andrew Fields. "There is no enjoyment or major advantage in winning 4-5 games per year by 40 points. We love the work every week, even if it means dropping a few during the season."
Oakdale got out to an early 13-0 lead, and the Warriors were able to make it a 20-7 game with about 3 minutes left in the half before Oakdale struck paydirt with :11 left in the second quarter.
"That was a blow for us," said Fields. We felt pretty good about 20-7 given how we played the first quarter and a half, and then the late touchdown took the wind out of our sails."
The Warriors will say goodbye to a small but talented senior class of 13 players, but look forward to the 2024 campaign that will see Sherwood return 16 starters. "We are a heavy junior class," said Fields. "We've been nurturing this group and have been looking forward to see how good they can be. We are putting all our chips on the table in 2024."

Warriors hand walter johnson their first loss of 2023
Sandy Spring, MD - Senior football players may have played their final regular season home game on Friday, but they also delivered a first loss to the visiting Walter Johnson Wildcats. Coming into Friday's contest at 7-0, the Wildcats jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead after converting a 21 yard field goal in the first quarter, and a 41 yard pass midway through the second.
But on the backs of the Warrior defense, Sherwood stayed the course. RB Van Mahoney started the second half off with a bang, jaunting 46 yards to cut the Wildcat lead to 3. Midway through the 4th quarter, Mahoney ran in for the winning TD on a 19 yard scamper behind the block of Brendan Heyer and an aggressive offensive line.
But the Warrior defense was the difference. Behind stellar performances by linebackers Walker Smith and Vasili Siarkas, the Warriors gave up just 3 yards per carry to Walter Johnson, who had dominated opponents on the ground leading up to the contest.
The Warriors will travel to unbeaten Quince Orchard on Friday in their regular season finale.

warrior offense erupts on homecoming, upends poolesville
Sandy Spring, MD - The Sherwood Warriors displayed their offensive might on Friday's Homecoming game, piling up over 500 yards of offense and 61 points. The Falcons were not willing to be victims, however, as they scratched and clawed their way to a 21-21 halftime score.
But the third quarter would not be nice to Poolesville, as the Warriors exploded for 35 points in the first 8 minutes of the second half, taking a 56-21 lead into the fourth quarter. A dominant offensive line, tough running, a potent passing attack, and a stingy defense would spell demise for Poolesville.
At 5-2, Sherwood is poised for the final stretch, facing an undefeated Walter Johnson team this Friday, followed by an undefeated Quince Orchard team in two weeks.

sherwood gets back to win column in damascus
Damascus, MD - After two straight losses, the Sherwood Warriors found their way back to the win column with a 28-21 in Damascus. The Warriors never trailed against the reigning 3A state champions. "We lost two straight games and had 7 turnovers in those games. We made it a priority to limit our opponent opportunities, and the kids were all in for 48 straight minutes," said head coach Andrew Fields.
Sherwood started the scoring - as they have all season - with a 66 yard drive, capped by a VJ Mahoney (22 carries, 68 yards, 4 TD) 1 yard TD plunge to make the score 7-0. Sherwood would extend their lead to 14-0 before Damascus closed the half with a 9 yard pass of their own and a 14-7 halftime score.
Freshman QB Matthew Larsen made his varsity debut, completing 80% of his passes and converting big plays at critical moments. Brendan Heyer also made some critical plays both on the ground and in the air, accumulating 85 yards of offense.
Defensively, Sherwood was led by DL Michael Robles, LB Walker Smith, and CB Leo Cantor who came up big late in the 4th quarter with a game sealing interception.
At 4-2, the Warriors come back home for just their third game of the year in a Homecoming matchup vs. Poolesville.

Warriors fall in overtime to blake
Sandy Spring, MD - The Blake Bengals outlasted the Sherwood Warriors on Friday night in a double overtime game decided by three points, 31-28.
Things would start on a positive note for the Warriors, forcing the Bengals into a 3 and out on their first series. On the ensuing punt, Junior LB Nyveek Ross blocked the Blake punt, and CB Leo Cantor capitalized on the block by recovering the ball in the endzone for a touchdown.
However, the Bengals were resilient the entire night, sustaining and responding to blow after blow from the Warriors.
In the second overtime the Bengals converted a 19 yard field for the 3-point win. On the night, Blake won the rushing battle and the turnover battle.
"My hat is off to Blake. They were prepared and played with passion all night. They deserved the win," said head coach Andrew Fields.

Derwood, MD - In a game that was never close, the Sherwood Warriors closed out on the Magruder Colonels Thursday night, 44-0.
Ryan Johnson began the scoring with a 3 yard plunge, and the Warriors never looked back, scoring 20 1st quarter points, and 17 more in the second quarter.
"The kids came to play," said head coach Andrew Fields. "Everyone contributed to the win, it was a clean win."
Senior WR Alex Lacey stole the show on offense, taking consecutive short passes the distance - one on a 33 yard catch and run, and another on a short pass that turned into a 55 yard touchdown.
Warrior special teams also made a huge impact, as K Nico Gamez forced a turnover on a kickoff, while K Dylan Henry punched in a 24 yard field goal.

Warriors shut down panthers, 8-7, Advance to 2-0
Sandy Spring, MD - It will go down as the tale of two days, a Friday that saw Paint Branch strike fast and with ease, and a Saturday that would be a defensive slugfest, leaving Paint Branch shut out for the final 37 minutes of play.
The first quarter was stopped with :54 seconds remaining due to lightening. Paint Branch led 7-0 by virtue of a 22 yard 4th and 13 touchdown pass, a beautifully thrown ball to the right corner of the endzone. When officials stopped the game, Paint Branch was in position to strike again - it was first and goal at the 6 yard line.
But the Warriors would have none of it. Saturday at 10 a.m., the game resumed. Sherwood looked like a different team, stuffing the Panthers on 4 straight plays, culminating with a Lucas Mir sack.
A 94 yard drive ensued, but the Panthers would stiffen on 4th and inches at the 2 yard line. Ironically, it turned out to be a great scoring opportunity for the Warriors, as 3rd and 12 from the 1 foot line saw sophomore DT Jaylen Mahoney tackle the ball carrier in the endzone. This would lead to a 7-2 halftime score.
The second half was an exchange of defensive might, as both the Warriors and Panthers struggled offensively. But when Sherwood needed it most, they came through. Starting at their own 21 yard line with just over 7 minutes remaining, the Warriors marched down the field on the legs of Brendan Heyer, VJ Mahoney, and Gantt Hagins. But the unlikely hero was WR Malachi McIver, who hauled in a 26 yard pass from Heyer, all the way to the 9 yard line. On the next play, Mahoney would scamper around left end for a 9 yard touchdown run, and a lead the Warriors would cling to until the final whistle.
"These kids showed me something today," said head coach Andrew Fields. "We were thin, have 8 guys out for various reasons, and the next man up mentality prevailed. They deserved the win and everything that comes with it."
The Warriors are now 2-0 as they travel to cross-town rival Magruder.

Warriors Win season opener, 34-14
Rockville, MD - The Sherwood Warrior Varsity Football team won their season opener behind a strong performance by their offensive line and a bruising running game on the legs of VJ Mahoney, Gantt Hagins, and Brendan Heyer. The junior trio accounted for 341 rush yards in the win.
Defensively, linebacker Walker Smith led the charge with 10 tackles, many in opportune moments. Michael Robles also had an outstanding day, accounting for 7 tackles - 4 for loss - as the Warrior defense left the Rams scoreless in the first half of play.
The Warriors headed into the 4th quarter with a commanding 34-7 lead before Rockville bolted into the endzone for one final score, making it a 34-14 final.
"Our kids rose to the occasion for sure," said head coach Andrew Fields. "We have had some bumps in the road, and the kids really responded. I couldn't be happier for them."
Things only get tougher this week as the Paint Branch Panthers head to Sandy Spring to meet up with the Warriors for their 2023 home opener. Last year, Sherwood came out on top 46 -32 and the Panthers will be seeking vengeance.

Fifteen Warriors Named to All-County Team
Sandy Spring, MD - The accolades keep rolling in for the 2022 Sherwood football team, as 15 Warriors were voted by coaches across Montgomery County as the best the county has to offer.
Warriors end 2022 season as 4A North Champs
Sandy Spring, MD - The Sherwood Warriors fell to eventual State Champion North Point Eagles, 31-0. After a hard-fought first half, which saw both teams locked at 0 for the first 23 minutes, North Point got on the board with just :15 to go in the half.
The Warriors wore down in the second half, ultimately succumbing to a brutal North Point running game, which would eventually lead them to their first state championship, a 31-14 win over Arundel High School.
While the season ended in defeat for the Warriors, it was not without success, as the Warriors were named the 4A North region champions by virtue of going undefeated in the 4A North, including wins over a then-undefeated Montgomery Blair and a tough Paint Branch team.
"I'm proud of what we accomplished. No one ever said we were the most talented or most experienced team in the state in 2022. But our kids played above and beyond their abilities and ended 9-3 and 4A North region champions. It's something we will build on," said head coach Andrew Fields.

9-2 sherwood to square off against north point
Sandy Spring, MD - The North Point Eagles will come to Sandy Spring, adding up to what will likely be the stiffest test of the season for the 9-2 Sherwood Warriors. "We will have our hands full," said head coach Andrew Fields. "We practiced and scrimmaged with them back in August, and they handled us pretty well. But we were a different team then."
The Eagles sport an explosive running game and an efficient passing game, while the strength of their team is a fast and aggressive defense.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Caruso Memorial.

Warriors finish regular season 7-2, #1 Seed
Sandy Spring, MD - The Sherwood varsity football team finished their 2022 regular season campaign 7-2, the same mark the 2021 team finished. "We had a sluggish start to the season, which was expected as we worked through some things. But the kids rallied and finished strong," said head coach Andrew Fields.
After week 4, the Warriors stood at 4-1, but faced a three game gauntlet that would include Northwest, Blair (6-0 at the time), and Paint Branch (4-1 at the time).
"To come out of those three games with two wins, we knew it would take a focus and an energy unlike what we had been putting in," said Fields, "and the kids rose to the occasion."
Hosting an undefeated Blair team, the Warriors never trailed, opening a two touchdown lead with 3 minutes remaining in the game before Blair scored a late touchdown, ultimately falling short at the Warrior 13 yard line. Blair has not led or tied Sherwood at any point since 2018 (tied), and 2014 (led).
Traveling to Paint Branch, the Warriors wanted to exact revenge on a 33-0 beating in 2021, a loss which stuck with the team for other reasons. In 2021, the Panthers led 27-0 with less than 2 minutes to go in the game, and decided to pass for a final touchdown to make the score 33-0. "We wanted to avenge that form of disrespect by playing good, sound football and winning the old-fashioned way - with toughness, gusto, and class," said Fields.
The Warriors finished out the regular season with a 38-0 dismantling of cross-town rival Magruder, a game which some thought would be closer.
As the playoffs loom, Sherwood's path to Navy Stadium will not be easy.
"There are a lot of good football teams in the state of Maryland. We will have to be at our best to have a chance to reach our goals."

Varsity Football Advances to 3-1
Kensington, MD - The varsity football team defeated the Einstein Titans on Friday, 41-6, behind a rushing attack that accumulated 227 yards and a defense that held the Titan offense in check most of the night.
Sophomore Gantt Hagins (2 TDs) got the night started on a 3 yard run on the Warriors first possession, and sophomore Van Mahoney led all rushers with 115 yards. QB Amari Allen (7/9, 1 TD) was efficient through the air and on the ground.
"We are evolving," said head coach Andrew Fields. "We are young, and where we're not young we're inexperienced. But the maturation process is clear, and we are excited about the second half of the season as our kids continue to develop."
Defensively, Senior Anthony Manana notched 8 tackles (3 TFLs), and Lucas Banks, Asa Virga, Jackson Arata, and Michael Robles all scored sacks on the day.
On Saturday, the JV Warriors duplicated the effort, besting Einstein 29-6 in a hard fought game.
The Warriors will host the Northwood Gladiators on September 30 for Homecoming.

Sherwood football rebounds in week 3
The Sherwood Warriors faced cross-town rival Blake High School on Friday night. What started as a first half rout ended on a 48 yard Amari Allen-to-Markel King walk off touchdown pass to avoid overtime.
The Warriors went up 14-0 midway thru the 2nd quarter on the running of sophomores Gantt Hagins and Van Mahoney, and the arm of Allen. Mahoney started off the scoring in the first quarter, and early in the second quarter, Allen found a streaking Sophomore Brendan Heyer down the mide of the field for a 56 yard touchdown strike to extend the lead to 14. Mahoney capped off the first half scoring with a 24 yard touchdown run.
But the Bengals stayed the course, and by virtue of turnovers and a steady defense, tied the game at 21 late in the fourth quarter.
With :34 left in the game and starting from their own 33 yard line, Sherwood marched to the Blake 48. With :04 remaining, the “Hail Mary” that will go down in Sherwood lore was unleashed, and mayhem ensued.
