2015 Damascus Summary
DAMASCUS, MD – The Montgomery Blair varsity football team walked into the Swarmin’ Hornets’ nest Friday night with one thing on their minds: “Win and you’re in the playoffs” for the second year in a row under 3rd year head coach Andrew Fields.Undefeated Damascus, however, had other ideas, administering a 41-7 beat down to ensure home field advantage and a playoff spot for the 18th year in a row.
Damascus (10-0) had a fail-proof plan: give the ball to senior running back Jake Funk. Funk, who is committed to University of Maryland, made it look easy by posting four touchdowns and running for 287 yards on 18 carries.
“It’s my offensive line, they do all the dirty work up front,” said Funk. “I get the open lanes from them and they make my job easy.”
Blair (6-4) struggled on both sides of the ball. Junior quarterback Desmond Colby was sacked two times and Damascus rolled up over 500 yards rushing.
"I think we played really sloppy and undisciplined,” said Damascus head coach Eric Wallich. “We missed extra points, we had penalties [and] we had turnovers.”
Blair failed to capitalize on the fumble recovery and Funk eventually found the end zone for the third time in the first half, cutting through the Blazer defense with a 62-yard run.
“If we played like we played today, we’re not going to be playing very long,” said Wallich. “We need to correct the mistakes and get the game plan together.”
Despite their season-ending loss, the Blazers find themselves in the playoffs for the second year in a row.
“It’ll be a tough road. We’ve come a long way from ground zero to where we are today,” said Blazers head coach Andrew Fields. “Our kids still don’t feel like they can beat the teams that are on the map. It’s a mental block. We’ve got to figure out how to get over that.”
Funk appeared eager for his postseason challenges. “We had home field last year, and it helped us out a lot,” he said. “Having it again this year is huge. It’s playoff mode. The intensity’s got to be higher, the focus has got to be higher. Everything we do, we have to take it a step further.”
