As much time as Montgomery Blair players spend on the practice field, in the weightroom, and watching film, it is easy to lose focus on priority #1: Academics.
For this reason, all varsity football players are required to attend
Study Hall every Monday and Wednesday from 2:20 - 3:30.
"When teenagers devote as much time and energy into their craft as our guys do, it is important to also provide an outlet for them to focus on what we consider our #1 priority, which is academics. Study Hall allows us to do that."
Assistant Principal Dirk Cauley has also instituted a tutoring program that works hand-in-hand with the study hall, calling for National Honor Society tutors to assist student-athletes in need.
In the off-season, players who have mastered subject matter in the areas of math, science, english, and social studies will also serve as peer-mentors for teammates who are struggling.
"It's one thing to teach kids, and it's quite another to have kids teaching kids," said Fields. "Montgomery Blair is one of the finest academic institutions in the United States of America, and it's important to me that our football program falls into line."
